I do love a good parody. ‘Taming Holden Caulfield’ is a fun multi-level read that is sure to entertain most readers. I will start with a bit of a warning, if you can’t handle a few, and by a few I mean a lot, of swear words and find yourself easily offended you might better stick with something more mainstream. That said, wow, what a fun ride this was. There are three ways a reader can view this and perhaps a seasoned reader can enjoy all aspects and really take in the richness of the story. The first is as a parody as I previously said and as such it is just loads and loads of fun. I was so taken by surprise from the onset by the fast paced in your face style. The second is a little less fun, in fact more sobering and that is as a look at the sad state of just how dependant so many people have become on antidepressants. The third is often how I choose to read most books and that is just as a fun tale for nothing more than my amusement. It works really well from that angle because there is just so much to enjoy here. In addition to Caulfield there will be other names that are familiar to most readers but none of this ride will be familiar in that homey, comfortable way. My favorite, however, was one that was new on me, Selma. I love her honest, if not a little harsh, approach to everything. She is exactly how I imagine a true goth girl would be and I love her for it.
